The diving at Malapascua and Leyte is offered to experienced divers holding a PADI Advanced Open Water or Level 2 certification, with 30 certified dives. The currents, depth and occasional reduced visibility of certain dives are factors that may occasionally make these dives more technical than usual. It is however possible for PADI Open Water divers to complete their PADI Advanced Open Water diver certificate during this safari (please consult us prior to safari).
The uniqueness of the Magellan safari is the search for the timid thresher shark at Malapascua and whale sharks at Padre Burgos. Other dives will permit you to discover exuberant reefs with exceptional fauna and colour: 800 varieties of hard and soft coral, more than 2500 species of classified coastal fish: frog fish, glass catfish, dragon fish, leaf fish, hundreds of species of nudibranches and schools of jack fish often in only 5 meters of water, schools of barracuda, batfish and butterfly fish, white tip sharks, 10 species of clown fish and with the consent of Neptune, we might even see some hammerhead sharks or manta rays in the region of Malapascua.
"North Point", situated just opposite the Blue Water Resort is only a few minutes by boat. The rocky formations and small canyons to the North of Malapascua are covered in a multitude of hard and soft corals. At this site, we regularly encounter an enormous variety of reef fish, several species of rays, nudibranches and occasionally some giant crabs. This site is also fantastic for night diving with a max depth of 23 meters.
This site consists of a large sea mound rising from the depth of 200 meters and finishing 15 meters below the surface. It is a succession of walls which penetrate the deep blue and which are patrolled by tunas, barracudas and jack fishes. This is also the site where you might cross paths with the thresher shark (from February to May) and manta rays (from April to January). The Monad Shoal site has a little brother, the Kimot Shoal, located further to the South.
On the journey that will lead you to this site you will often be accompanied very often by pods of dolphins. Calangaman is a incredibly beautiful small island and home to just a few people. It is a great place to stop between 2 dives. This is equally a superb spot for non divers to enjoy a small taste of island paradise. In the areas we also find 2 sites with similar characteristics: Ormoc and Nunez Shoal. With a reef top at 10 meters and a drop off to more than 200 meters, the possibilities are immense: caves, arches, overhangs, flowing with sponges, gorgonians and coral. With a visibility that can sometimes reach 30 meters, this is a beautiful playground for divers to admire reef sharks, rays and all types of turtles.
At this site we find another sea mound situated only 200 meters from Leyte. Strong currents may sometimes run through this fascinating site which is also home to a cleaning station for pelagic and reef fishes: groupers, cods, sweetlips, surgeon fish, fusiliers, tuna and sea breams.
A vertical yet irregular deep drop off, the beauty of this dives is seen in the bouquets of black coral, soft coral cervicornis and ascidies which cover the wall. In certain spots we find areas of sand and macro fauna.
This site is ideal on a calm day to observe the whale shark (November to May in the bay of Sonoc), the manta ray as well as several species of sharks. Sometimes dolphins join us for the boat crossing to the dive site. Please note: in the marine sanctuary of Napantaw (site for Rio's wall and Toshi's wall) we will observe gigantic gorgonians, bouquets of black coral and numerous soft corals. When the current is not too strong, you will be able to observe a cave in 30 meters of water. Turtles, barracudas, groupers and batfishes will accompany you along the dive.
