Accommodation

As refuge from the Siberian climate, and to enjoy the beauty of this region, the Abyss Team has decided to base ourselves on the Island of Olkhon. This Island is 72 km long and situated directly in the centre of the lake. Separated from the continent by Maloye More Straits, this region includes a range of topography and is inhabited principally by very humble fishermen living here all year round. Steeped in history, this is definitely the birth place of many local legends.

Traditional Datcha

Basing ourselves at the centre of either the village of Meres or Kuzhir (based on availability), in a traditional Datcha built of wood, our heating is provided by an ingenious heated foyer. It is not uncommon to feel a little over hot for the first couple of days. Offering a simple and traditional comfort, the datcha comprises 3 rooms (2 doubles and 1 quad), a banya (Russian sauna) and shared toilets and bathrooms. Electricity is only available during the day. Meals are prepared on site and comprise mainly lake fish, smoked or salted, grilled with sauces, accompanied by potatoes, rice, pasta and pelemy (roasted nuts) or pirozhki (sandwiches).

This accommodation formula allows us to live the full adventure, sampling a simple but more than adequate lifestyle and giving us the privilege to integrate completely with the local village people.
