A long way from any modern development and rarely visited, the region of Rajah Empat is one of the most beautiful dive destinations in the Indo-Pacific region, and arguably the world. Even today new species of fish and invertibraes are being discovered amongst the splendid coral formations covering the varied underwater topography. Magnificent reefs, coral plateaus with rare fauna, drop offs and even plane wrecks await us. Frog fish, ghost pipefish, dragon fish, leaf fish, nudibranches, rare pygmy sea horses, schools of jacks and snapper, butterfly fish, barracuda, bat fish, grey and white tip reef sharks, carpet sharks and manta rays are a few of the fabulous species encountered during the magnificent diving at Rajat Empat.
All diving is done from our dive tenders at a rythmn of 3 per day. This trip is reserved for divers holding a Padi Advanced Open Water or Level 2 Cetificate with a minimum of 30 logged ocean dives. Some of the dives in this region are subject to occassional strong currents and require a good level of experience. The closest decompression chamber is located at Manado, to the North of Celebes.
A reef dropping from just below the surface to a depth of 30 meters, it is covered by magnificent coral heads where carpet sharks take shelter. The reef wall is covered in mulicolored sponges and soft corals where leaf and scorpion fish can regularly be seen. Off the edge of the reef in the blue we take part in a spectacle of schooling fish rarely seen at other destinations.
A potato shaped reef starting in 2-4 meters and ending on a sandy bottom at about 25 meters. The southern end of the reef is where we usually dive. This reef is a rare beauty with a large variety of life inhabiting the zone. Leaf fish tease the sleeping carpet sharks and trevally chase the fusiliers with the jacks competing as well. Barracudas swim in the current with the bat fish and tuna searching for their spots near the reef. In addition to the spectacle around us, remember to stay alert as rare pygmy sea horses are also found on this reef. Amazing.
A magnificent night dive at the base of a steep cliff. Entering the area and preparing for the dive our light is provided only by phosphorescence in the water and the stars.
We encounter all types of crabs, shrimp, mandarin fish, crayfish, nudibranches and flat lobster. All the nocturnal fauna is awake to create an unforgettable memory.
A reef starting at 8 meters and dropping off to a sandy bottom at 45 meters. On the reef top we often find good sized tawny sharks. The reef wall is covered in colour where great small life is abundant while in the blue there is a large quantity of pelagic activity with barracudas, tuna and jacks. Be sure to look around as things move and happen pretty quickly on this dive.
As the name reminds us, we actually cross the equator on this dive. Between 2 islands we come across large rocky outcrops at a depth of between 8 and 20 meters. Quite a labyrinth with plenty of surprises. Encounters include tawny sharks, nudibranches, barracudas, leaf fish and many more. A rare dive between two hemispheres with only your bubbles as the frontier.
A promising dive with the possibility of encounters with the miniature and the rare. Pigmy sea horses in red, orange and yellow. On the edge of the reef there is a large cave with several entries to animate the dive. Once back on the surface, keep an eye above as the island cliff wall is inhabited by thousands of fruit bats.
This dive evolves around large coral outcrop with a depth of about 16 meters. We regularly find epaulette sharks, schools of bat fish, dozens of gorgonian fans, and a magnificent reef plateaux of unrivalled beauty. This is a beautiful dive which we are sure will remain as one of your great diving memories.
